Styles collaborated with Mitch Rowland and the song’s producers to write the song. They were influenced by Richard Brautigan’s American novel In Watermelon Sugar (1968). Music critics praised the song’s concept and vocals, with many praising Styles’ performance. The song was also a commercial success, reaching the top ten in more than 20 countries and winning the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance in 2021.
